Alignment issues.
Things my truck needs: Alignment issues resolved.
Sad panda.
The castor is out about 1.5 degrees but the camber is out as well. I can get castor/camber adjustable kingpin bearings but they are $115 each AND it means completely tearing apart the knuckles to get to them. Now I can tear apart a knuckle and have it back together in about an hour a side, maybe 45 minutes, but I don’t know how to, or have the tools needed to adjust the camber castor once I’m in there. Looking at $750 in addition to the $200 for a coolant leak (parts and labor). I could do the coolant issue myself but I kinda owe this guy for helping me out last minute for free on some other stuff before my white rim trip. Garf. Enjoy an old ad.

I’m assuming they’re off because you OFFROADZED too hard and bent the case?

Possible, though its more probable that the shop that installed my knuckle bearings previously just didn’t shim them right. I looked into doing it myself but there are at least 2 separate SST’s involved (special service tools)...I can it it down to the trunion in a hurry, but doing the bearings and shims requires tools I don’t have.
That being said, my DS rear wheel toe is out .5 degrees because of OFFROADZEDING and hitting a big rock I didn’t see....ooops.

What’s a repair on an off road vehicle without winging it to get what you need done?

Interesting. I know a Rover, which is superficially similar, does not have any capacity for adjustment of the caster or camber at all. Its kingpin setup is a top pin in a sintered metal “Railko” bushing and a tapered roller at the bottom - with tension on a thrust washer in the Railko adjusted with shims as the only thing serviceable short of replacing the bushing. I’ve seen bent cases, though.

True. Trails a little different then garage. My dad remounted his radiator with bungee cords when the brackets snapped on the trail and it took us like a decade to get around to fixing it. Was still working but we figured it was time to get it done.

Trail repairs, sure, but that’s more about not dying and less about a funny noise at 70 mph or bad tire wear patterns.

Very true. My dad was talking last night he wanted to get the hardtop restored and back on his FJ40 before next winter. I am stoked.

Mine needs wheel bearings, tie rods, front calipers, front sway bars, and of course an alignment. Hopefully it holds a few more weeks. It tracks straight, and nothing is out of line yet, so it’s got that going for it. That is of course on top of the trans acting weird, and the engine making odd noises. 2 more months until it’s a dedicated project. Also, the back window quit working, so I have no access to the rear.

wheel alignment is overrated.
